After nearly ten years of experience as a patent attorney, Mr. Buchanan recognized a need for a better approach to the delivery of patent prosecution services. In 2008, he founded BIPO based on two guiding principles:
efficient and effective internal workflows can produce a work product of higher value; and
current prosecution activities must always be guided by the latest developments in the caselaw
Mr. Buchanan counsels and assists clients with the preparation of patent applications and the prosecution of applications in the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He also assists foreign patent counsel with the prosecution of patent applications in patent offices around the world.
Mr. Buchanan has a graduate level scientific education in microbiology and immunology, and routinely conducts legal work relating to these and other technical areas, including chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, medical diagnostics, medical devices, and general mechanical arts.
Prior to practicing law, Mr. Buchanan worked in various capacities in the medical device industry, including as a Good Laboratory Practices Study Director in a leading medical device testing laboratory. He also clerked in the food, drug and medical device practice group of Hogan & Hartson, a Washington, D.C. based law firm.
Prior to founding BIPO, Mr. Buchanan practiced in the Chicago intellectual property boutique firm of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione.
Mr. Buchanan has taught patent law as an adjunct law school faculty member.

Mr. Buchanan is the founder of and maintains Promote the Progress, a legal blog focused on patent law issues. Started in 2004, Promote the Progress was one of the first blogs that specialized on patent law issues. The site continues to be recognized as one of the most popular patent law sites on the web.
Mr. Buchanan is a member of various bar associations, including the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan.
Mr. Buchanan serves in various professional organizations, including the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and the Toledo Intellectual Property Law Association (TIPLA).
Publications:
Throughout his scientific and professional careers, Mr. Buchanan has enjoyed writing. He has published several technical articles in peer-reviewed journals and has served as a special contributor on intellectual property and technology law issues for American Lawyer Media’s law.com.
Mr. Buchanan coauthored IP Memes, an intellectual property newsletter, with Douglas J. Sorocco and Stephen Nipper.
